Technical Background
The technical data for the
College Success Factors Index (CSFI)
and the School Success Factors Index (SSFI) is very encouraging.
Both
the CSFI and the SSFI have been extensively researched, and
have significant norm
group, reliability, and validity data.
A
number of studies have also been conducted to validate that
the CSFI accurately identifies "at
risk" students.
The CSFI scores of freshman students could predict non-return
for the second year at a statistically significant level. Our
study of 215 students from a public university in the Mid-West
found a chi square measurement of 5.46, which was significant
at the .02 level. This relationship was found between students
whose CSFI scores identified them as likely non-returning
students, when compared to their actual return to the
university the next year.
These
results lead us to believe that CSFI scores can identify the
students most likely not to return before
they actually drop out.
With this data, individual students could be targeted for
counseling and remediation, and retention rates
improved.
