School Success Factors Index
The School Success Factors Index (SSFI)
is designed for students in the 9th to 12th grades. It
profiles each student's academic strengths and weaknesses, and
pinpoints those areas which need improvement.
The School Success Factors Index (SSFI)
utilizes the same theoretical background as the College
Success Factors Index (CSFI). Both indexes use the same eight
factors as categories. Separate technical norms have been
developed for the School Success Factors Index (SSFI) in each grade level (9-12) so that
students may compare their scores to their peers. We are in
our tenth year with high schools and gear-up programs
throughout the country. This
year our norm group has grown to well over 20,000 high school
students. The
correlation of the SSFI with high school grades is from
r.=.35-.50.

Two
programs are available utilizing the SSFI:
1. SSFI Assessment--the
measurement program also has two applications:
a. SSFI
booklets.
Students fill in their responses in the booklet.
The booklet is self-scored and the profile is provided
on "Page 4" in each booklet for the individual
student and counselor/instructor.
b. SSFI
software for the PC.
When large numbers of students take the SSFI, we
utilize the usable test booklet and the SSFI scan form.
Like any mid-term test, these results can be scored on
a same-day basis, offering individual printouts within hours.
The
printout includes the student's total and sub-test scores, and
a bar chart to assist the student/counselor/instructor in
understanding which areas are good, average or need
improvement.
2.
Octagon Learning System
is designed to offer the students a curriculum of improvements
in the eight areas of the SSFI.
The curriculum is based on a book entitled, Making
the Dean's List, and it includes 200 transparency-ready
lessons and exercises for instructors. It is also available
with a PowerPoint presentation for instructors.
These presentations can be used as a 16-week total
student development course, or a single-class module for
instructors in a variety of subjects.
Training
and Consultation related to the SSFI:
1.
Training and consultation are provided on a one-day, or
project basis. Training
involves counselors and other faculty on the SSFI criteria,
technical aspects and case study interpretations.
2.
Consultation with administrators and faculty on the
overall concept of Octagon Learning within flex days, or
during institutional strategic planning sessions.
3.
Working with small groups of faculty to design a
specific program to increase success in a subject field such
as English, nursing or mathematics.
