Octagon Learning System
Through
the Octagon Learning System,
we are dedicated to increasing the success of college
students, and those striving to become college students. This
year, thousands of students applying to college will be turned
down due to inadequate GPA. They lack the basic foundations
for college success.
Research
data indicates that half of the entering freshman at certain
colleges will not return the following year. Even more
disturbing is this number--40% of high school students
drop out before graduation. These numbers represent a
terrible loss--to the student, to the student's family, and to
the society in which that student must eventually work.
The
importance of success in school and college simply cannot be
overemphasized. In addition, success in academic environments
is due to learnable factors--skills and attitudes which are
the foundations for academic
success. That is one of the reasons we developed
the Octagon Learning System.
Based
on 15 years of research, this system offers eight
factors that are the foundations for student
success. The Octagon Learning System
measures and improves these eight factors using four
components:
Assessment:
The College Success
Factors Index (CSFI) and the School
Success Factors Index (SSFI) measure exactly where
a student stands compared to his peers in successful student
groupings. This assessment also identifies a student's
particular strengths and weaknesses according to the eight
factors.
Intervention:
We
have developed a curriculum of interventions based on the eight
factors--to improve the factors that lead to
student success. The curriculum is based on a book entitled Making
the Dean's List,
and includes 200 transparency-ready lessons and exercises.
It is also available with a PowerPoint presentation for
instructors.
These presentations can be used as a 16-week total
student development course, or a single class module for
instructors in a variety of subjects.
Research:
Our program includes refining
and updating our program regularly. We are beginning our fifth year with over 140
colleges and universities using the Octagon
Learning System. This
year our norm group has grown to well over 10,000 college
students, representing research universities, state
universities, community colleges and proprietary colleges and
universities.
Training:
The
Octagon
Learning System
works best when instructors and counselors have been trained
to administer, score, and interpret results as well as offer
interventions. Faculty
training maximizes
the effectiveness of our program, and thus improves student
success and retention.
