Faculty Training
The products which comprise the
Octagon Learning System (CSFI,
SSFI, & Making the Dean's List) work best when instructors
and counselors have been trained to administer, score, and
interpret results as well as offer interventions. Faculty
training maximizes the effectiveness of the Octagon Learning
System, and thus improves student success and retention.
All faculty training sessions are conducted by the
developer of
the Octagon Learning
System, Dr. Edmond Hallberg. Training and consultation is provided on a one-day or project
basis. Consultations can be scheduled within flex days or during
institutional strategic planning sessions. Generally, we work
with small groups of faculty to design a specific program to
increase success in a subject field such as English, nursing
or mathematics. There are several
faculty training packages available:
Faculty
Orientation: This half-day session is designed to
familiarize faculty with the rudiments of the College Success
Factors Index (CSFI). Such topics as the technical background,
the criteria, and the case study interventions of the CSFI are
also discussed.
Faculty
Curriculum Training: This 1- or 2-day training session includes
the basic training mentioned above, and also includes
step-by-step application of various interventions to improve
student success and retention. The training follows a 16 week
student development curriculum published in Making the Dean's
List, which includes
specific course objectives, methods, class exercises and
assessment strategies.
Linking
the CSFI to Institutions:
Linking the CSFI to institutions includes programs in
student development classes, college orientation, cohort
classes, probation seminars, individual counseling,
parent/spousal orientation, classroom subject orientation,
EOPNS orientation and instruction, high school early alert,
and special population interventions such as nursing and
research.
